STATEMENT

Woodland Way of life

There is a philosophy of the importance of integrating or centering the self in one’s work.

Painting is a way of life for me, not just an occupation. It’s part of my core of being. It keeps me centered and balanced. And when your core is centered in your work, you are allowing greater forces to work through you. You can then do things far beyond what you comprehend yourself.

———

i have spent the last decade documenting my Woodland Spirit landscapes and WildFlowers from across the country, all the way from Cape Cod to California. I tend toward a light and loose style of painting watercolors with strong undertones of brush painting. I see Nature’s stories through my past and present memories of the woods and wildflowers, and I strive to find ways to tell that story through my artwork.

I see trees as people and focus on their interconnected nature to each other and to us. Each tree holds a meaning of a person who I’ve met or interacted with. We are just like trees – we fall when we don’t get enough light, we’re thirsty when the rains don’t come. I research woodland trees by discovering their past symbolism and create new interpretations of these meanings in my artwork.

My WildFlowers series evokes strong symbols of fleeting moments that are somewhat fragile and never seem to last very long. Through their short bursts of life they remind us of how delicate we are and that we can choose to thrive in this season or quickly fade. Flowers do what they do: they bloom and are magnificent yet their beauty doesn’t last. It’s on display and then leaves us wondering, anticipating, remembering, and longing for their return to bloom once more and so the cycle continues.
